Variety Characteristics:

Nadine  is a vigorous mid-season variety with very high potential and good storage characteristics. It sets numerous round oval, uniform, bright white fleshed tubers suited to table consumption.

Unique disease resistance characteristics for Nadine includes: Resistance to golden nematode Ro1 and moderate resistance to pale cyst nematodes Pa2/3, common scab, bruising, Black leg and PVX. Nadine is resistant to PVY and requires a standard North American management program for late blight.

Nadine is widely adapted and demonstrates best performance were crops can acquire sufficient moisture throughout the growing cycle.

Nadine does not produce a large vigorous vine and the vine has a determinant growth cycle.

Nadine will set 15-22 tubers per plant depending on the seed tuber type and physiological age of the seed.

Nadine has a lower dry matter content so excessive applications of nitrogen and chloride based potassium fertilizers may aggravate the dry matter content further. 

 Seed Preparation:

Cold seed should be warmed to 9-10°C (48-50 °F) to minimize bruising during handling.  Pre-warming may be necessary depending on the planting date, as Nadine has a average dormancy. Nadine can successfully be pre-cut. Optimum cut seed sizes are > 75-80% of individual seed weights between 1.5 - 3.0 ounces. Ideally, do not pre sprout and desprout the variety before or at planting which could lead to weaker vines and larger tuber sets.

 Fertility:

Nadine responds well to nitrogen applications, however, not all N should be applied pre plant or at planting. Apply only a portion (70-75%) by planting.  Fertility levels(N,P,K,Mg,S...) should be based on a yield target of 700-800 cwt/acre.

Irrigated - Apply N fertility as a pre plant and planter application, the balance beginning after tuber inititation and on a weekly basis thereafter. Excessive N prior to tuber inititation can cause the stolons to "run" or elongate which can lead to sunburn/greening and an unven tuber profile.  Light coarse soils may reuire up to 275-325 lb/acre N 

Dryland - Apply a portion of of the N at preplant or planting and the balance at tuber initiation.  Nadine responds well to foliar weekly applications of N from 60-65 DAP to 85-90 DAP in the development stage. Dryland N fertilization totals can range from 165-185 lb/ac N.

Planting:

Nadine responds best when soil temperatures are at or above 7°C (45°F). Seed piece depth should be 5-8 cm (4-5") under most conditions in well drained soils.  Plant spacing of 25 cm (12-14") under dryland conditions and (10-12") under irrigated conditions.

 Cultivation:

Nadine requires a higher nitrogen fertilization than most because ofthe determinant vine and larger set than most other white varieties.  A knowledge of field nitrogen will be helpful in determining levels of nitrogen to apply. Herbicides containing metribuzin can be used; always follow label recommendations for soil type and conditions. Nadine gives good results on well drained soils. It will emerge quickly and develop a good ground covering foliage.  Nadine requires a well structures potato hill.

 Harvest and Storage:

Nadine is not susceptible to internal bruising or to mechanical damage. It will store if properly handled, cured and ventilated. Apply a treatment of a post hravest fungicide control fusarium, black dot and silver scurf.  Avoid free moisture in storage and keep potatoes at a consistent temperature. Optimum storage and packing results can be realized over an extended table potato shipping season.  If there is above average soil moisture from rain or over irrigation at vine kill or post vine kill, a post harvest fungicide treatment is highly suggested, either during bin loading or via the ventilation system.
